Chair of Governors – North London Collegiate School

Edgware, Middlesex

RSAcademics Ltd are delighted to support North London Collegiate School with the appointment of this strategic position.

North London Collegiate School is seeking a Chair of Governors to take over from the current Chair, Robert Hingley, who steps down in July 2024 after four years as Chair of Governors.

Founded in 1850 by Frances Mary Buss, a pioneer of women’s education, NLCS celebrates 175 years next year. It is one of the leading all girls academic day schools in the country, and a busy and vibrant place in which to work. Scholarship and academic endeavour are at the heart of the ambitious educational experience that is offered to students. NLCS retains its place at the forefront of pedagogy and academic debate. Students are encouraged and inspired to become self-sufficient and tenacious in their scholarship, and independence of spirit and imagination is prized. The school’s location, a 30-acre estate in North London, provides it with the freedom to take advantage of the proximity of the capital, and the unparalleled educational opportunities that it provides, while offering the advantages of easily accessible sporting and musical facilities in the peace and quiet of its extensive gardens.

NLCS is both intellectually challenging and collaborative. The Senior Leadership Team is ambitious and outward-looking. The school offers a wide ranging and demanding curriculum, with many opportunities for academic extension, independent research and cross curricular activities. Sixth formers are able to study for A levels or the highly regarded International Baccalaureate Diploma. A significant proportion of students apply successfully to Oxbridge and Ivy League (or equivalent) institutions in the USA. The education that provided is underpinned by an extensive pastoral care system, through which every student is nurtured, supported, and encouraged to lead a balanced and thoughtful life.

The Chair of Governors will have the right blend of experience, authority and expertise to lead the very able and committed Board of Governors and work alongside the Head, Vicky Bingham. The role of Chair, which is a non-executive pro-bono appointment, is both stimulating and challenging and will appeal to those with a deep interest in education and an understanding of, or a readiness to learn about, school governance and compliance. Anyone considering the role should not be overly concerned about lack of educational experience or direct experience on a school governing body. They will have other relevant experience drawn from other contexts. They would, in any event, be given any necessary induction and training.
