Deputy Head (Academic) – Marlborough College

The College is seeking an outstanding Deputy Head (Academic) to lead the academic life of the school, an individual who will inspire both staff and pupils, and make a significant contribution to helping one of the UK’s leading boarding schools achieve its academic ambitions.

For January 2021

Founded in 1843, Marlborough College is the largest co-educational independent boarding school in the UK with around 1000 pupils, aged 13 to 18.  The College is academically ambitious, offering a fast-paced, contemporary, challenging and enriching education within a warm, inclusive and spiritual environment.

The vast majority of pupils are boarders, studying a range of subjects to A level and Pre-U. There are 140 teaching staff and over 400 non-teaching staff.  Academic results are strong.  In 2019 at A Level 78% of pupils achieved A* to B grades (or Pre-U equivalent) with the average number of UCAS points equivalent to AAB, and this year’s EPQ submissions achieved a record breaking 54% at A*.  At (I)GCSE 42 grades were equivalent to the old style A*, and 95% A* to B grades.

Pupils regularly win places at the world’s elite universities to pursue the most competitive courses.  In 2019 13 pupils won places at Oxbridge, five secured places at Ivy League universities in the US, and four went on to study medicine.

The life of the College is a full one, extending over weekends as well as weekdays.  Each member of staff is required to play an active part in the co-curricular life of the College, and to serve as a boarding house tutor.

The successful candidate will be appointed by The Master and will attend some meetings of the College Council as well as being a member of the College Management Team and such other committees and teams as the Master deems appropriate.  He or she will play a key role in the strategic and operational management of the College as a whole.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious and forward thinking academic leader to excel within one of the UK’s foremost schools.
