Director of Schools – Shrewsbury International Asia

China

This is an outstanding and rare opportunity for an individual with the experience, ability and commitment to become Director of Schools for the prestigious Shrewsbury International Asia schools group. The successful candidate is likely to come from a background in school leadership, but SIA is also keen to consider applicants from other backgrounds.

Position available April 2020 or sooner

Shrewsbury School, with a distinguished history dating from 1552 and now one of the leading co-educational boarding schools in the UK, was one of the earliest British independent schools to set up an international school. Shrewsbury International School Bangkok opened in 2003 and now has a reputation throughout Southeast Asia for delivering an excellent education in the Shrewsbury tradition, adapted to local circumstances.

Shrewsbury International Asia (SIA) was established in 2017 and primary schools in Bangkok and Hong Kong have been added to the group. Three schools in China will follow, the first to open in 2021.

An important feature of Shrewsbury International Asia is that it works with a single international partner, which provides strong financial foundations and a clarity of vision about how Shrewsbury School’s tradition and ethos can be translated into the Asian context.

The vacancy for a new Director of Schools arises because Stephen Holroyd will be standing down after 32 years of service to Shrewsbury in the UK and internationally. The Director of Schools works across all the schools in the group, line-managing the school Principals. The focus of the role will be on the continued success of the existing Shrewsbury International Asia schools, two of which remain in their infancy, and the establishment and successful operation of the three new schools in China.

The successful candidate will need exceptional cultural adaptability, a readiness for the challenges that come from operating in different countries and the particular complexity of establishing schools in China, a deep commitment to the education for which Shrewsbury School and Shrewsbury International Asia have become known, and a determination to strive for the highest standards across the group. He or she must be able to earn the respect of the Principals in the six SIA schools, colleagues across the group and in Shrewsbury School in the UK, and members of the SIA Advisory Board. Familiarity with Asia and with China would be an advantage.

The balance of the work in the early years of the position is likely to mean that China will be the most appropriate base, and extensive travel on a weekly basis should be expected. Shrewsbury International Asia will offer a highly competitive salary and benefits package,

Interested candidates are invited to contact Jean Sullivan, Head of International Search, by email or telephone (JeanSullivan@RSAcademics.com or +44 (0)7885 879887) for an initial discussion or to arrange a confidential discussion with Dan Lewis or Keith Clark.
