The Value of Independent Insight: A Head’s Experience of Parent Surveys

Nik Pears, Head, St Michael's Prep School

I first came across RSAcademics through the Appointments team when I began to explore headship opportunities. A little later, during my time as a governor at another prep school, I heard more about the consultancy side of the organisation when they came to speak to the governing body. By the time I joined St Michael’s Prep in January 2021, I already had a sense of the professionalism and expertise behind the name.

In 2022, we commissioned our first parent survey with RSAcademics. As a new Head, I wanted a clear benchmark: an honest, independent view of how parents were experiencing the school. The survey provided exactly that. The whole process was excellent from start to finish. The team asked thoughtful questions about how best to tailor the survey to our context, and everything was handled with complete professionalism. The survey was delivered on time, discreetly, and with real sensitivity around any parental concerns raised.

The insights were invaluable. On the back of that first experience, we decided to adopt a three‑year cycle for parent surveys to allow us to track progress over time. When we completed our most recent survey, the results were even more positive than the first. It was encouraging to see clear gains in the areas previously highlighted for improvement.

We shared the findings with parents, staff and governors, and the feedback reinforced that we are moving in the right direction. At the same time, the survey helped us identify where we could do better. For example, we have begun a full review of our communications to ensure parents receive information in a clear and timely way. We have also revisited our reporting processes, including the structure of parents’ evenings and the balance between online and hybrid formats. The survey also captured several resource-related suggestions that have helped us consolidate our thinking for future planning.

One of the most pleasing aspects was the strong parent take‑up. It showed a community willing to engage. RSAcademics’ approach undoubtedly helped make that possible.

To anyone considering working with RSAcademics, I would simply say: go for it. I would definitely recommend them, and I already have. The team has been helpful, friendly and supportive throughout, and the insights we’ve gained have genuinely shaped our development as a school.

The experience has been brilliant, and I look forward to continuing the partnership.
