Durell Barnes

Head of Governance and Compliance

Durell Barnes is Head of Governance and Compliance at RSAcademics, supporting schools and trusts with governance reviews, board development and training in areas such as inspection and safeguarding. He works closely with Chairs and Governors to strengthen governance practice, clarify responsibilities and ensure boards are confident in their oversight.

Since joining RSAcademics in 2016, Durell has led bespoke governance reviews for individual schools, multi-school groups and educational charities in the UK and internationally. His training is tailored to each context and can be delivered on site or remotely.

Durell brings deep sector knowledge from his previous role as Deputy Director and Head of Communications at the Independent Schools Inspectorate, where he liaised with Ofsted, the Department for Education, ISC and school associations. He played a key role in developing inspection frameworks and safeguarding protocols, including for British Schools Overseas.

Earlier in his career, Durell taught in HMC schools for 21 years, including as Deputy Head, with responsibility for curriculum, assessment, staff development and strategic planning. He has held governance roles across state, independent and international education, and chaired both commercial and charitable boards.

Durell’s wealth of experience is highly valued. He helps schools build effective, informed governance – equipping them with adaptable frameworks that foster resilient leadership and long-term impact.
