The appointment of a new head is the start of a journey, not the end, and there is much for the new head and the governing body to do to prepare for a strong and positive start in role.
As a company, we have long been committed to coaching and mentoring for both new and experienced heads as well as for their leadership teams and we have seen the transformative power of these sessions. We very strongly recommend that both experienced heads and first-time heads preparing for their role seek professional coaching. We have a number of excellent coaches in our team and we also work with coaching organisations to ensure that all of our appointees have access to first-rate coaches to suit their needs and aspirations.
We have formed a partnership with the organisation Love Your Coaching, founded by Charlie Warshawski. Love Your Coaching work in a wide range of sectors and bring a depth and breadth of experience and wisdom to the table. They have a specialist Love Your Coaching in Education division and, whether you are a head or a governor wanting to support a head, we very strongly recommend that you look at what they offer.
Love Your Coaching
The coaching company The Sixty is also highly recommended. They are executive coaches who have had senior careers at executive level in large-scale organisations across a wide range of sectors. ‘The Sixty’ refers to the invaluable sixty minutes spent in each coaching session. Ros Sweeting is one of the founders of The Sixty and her career as a partner in a law firm as well as Chair of a major HMC school gives her a hugely important perspective which greatly strengthens the value of her coaching sessions.
The Sixty CoachingFurther, a number of our Senior Advisors are trained executive coaches and can support appointees both as they prepare to take up their role and once they are in post.

Her approach to coaching is reflective and creative, challenging yet collaborative. She works ‘below the surface,’ drawing on psychodynamic and systems theory to support leaders in facing change and transition; building personal, team and distributed leadership capability; and age-old issues around taking up authority in role, managing ‘difficult interactions’ and maintaining optimism and sanity in uncertain times.
She is accredited in the use of several psychometric diagnostic and developmental tools and experienced in conducting 360 performance reviews.
Andrea takes great pleasure in combining her depth of understanding about people, interpersonal relationships, group dynamics and diversity to help leaders develop the insight, capacity, and confidence to take command of their lives and to maximize their potential in ways they hadn’t anticipated possible.
