“In the last ten years, Heads have faced an increasingly complex and challenging environment in which expectations of many stakeholders across the school community have changed.”
What makes an exceptionally good Head?
The New Art of Headship, published in September 2023, reveals nine major challenges that Heads are now wrestling with, based on RSAcademics’ research findings into the attitudes, qualities, actions and skills of effective Heads.
In the latest research “unprecedented financial and strategic pressures” were cited as a key challenge. Also, increasingly demanding parents who are focused on “value for money” are more likely to raise contentious issues and submit complaints than previously, Heads said.
The research will benefit:
- Existing Heads: helping them become even better in their role
- Those hoping to become Heads in the future: providing inspiration and ideas
- Governors: as they go about supporting and developing their current Head or prepare to appoint a new one
